What is Ayurveda?
Ayu - life
Veda - knowledge
Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old health system, originating in India, means science of life and longevity, and is based on principles and rhythms found in nature. Life here does not refer to life of an individual but to the life of the entire universe, which the individual is part of. The conscious that is present in an individual is the same conscious that is present in the entire universe. In the Vedas everything in the universe is made up of the five elements: ether, air, fire, water, earth.
Ayurveda makes use of daily and seasonal lifestyle practices (including diet, yoga, pranayama and meditation), healing herbs, and purification therapies. The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of a healthy person and to heal the illness or disease of a sick person. Ayurveda allows the individual to know their body, mind and spirit at its deepest level and experience the wisdom of this consciousness to appreciate the conscious that is present in the entire universe. The answers to healing lies within each of us and Ayurveda just helps us to remember how to listen to our body, mind and spirit.
"Body, Senses, Mind and Soul are the main four components of Life, without their constant connection Life cannot exist."
(Charak Samhita 1)
Daily (Dinacharya) & Seasonal (Ritucharya) Ayurvedic practices and routines are essential for maintaining good health. In Ayurveda we nurture the whole person - the physical, mental & spiritual bodies while cleansing the senses so we can be in harmony with nature's rhythms and with our external world & universe. The daily rituals create balance in our constitution and help to regulate our biological clock. These practices aid our digestion, absorption and assimilation of nutrients from our food. It also calms our nervous system to create peace, happiness and a long life.
Each person has their own unique constitution (Prakriti) that is made of all elements found in nature, broken down into three categories. Vata is made up of ether and air. Pitta is fire and water. Kapha is water and earth. When our constitution is out of balance (Vikriti), disease is created. Ayurveda looks at disease in six stages and through these stages we can learn to listen to our body's natural intelligence, so we can reverse the disease process and guide our body back into perfect balance & harmony. There isn't one recommendation or treatment for everyone, each client is treated as an individual. Treatments are very individualized and unique. Ayurveda is the ultimate preventative medicine.
Ayurveda has been effective in alleviating insomnia, menopause symptoms, infertility, osteoarthritis, IBS, inflammatory skin diseases, food allergies and intolerances, anxiety, depression and many other imbalances.
Definition of Health: "One who is established in self, balanced doshas, balanced agnis, well formed dhatus, proper elimination of malas, well functioning bodily processes and whose mind, senses and soul are filled with bliss is called a healthy person." (Sushruta Samhita 15. 38)
